This resource was originally developed as a travel safety card for MSU faculty, staff, and students planning to travel abroad. It was produced by members of Michigan State University's Security Abroad Group. By putting this information on the Web, our aim is to make it available to MSU and non-MSU travelers alike.
- MSU Information on travel and immunizations.Check immediately because of necessary lead times for some immunizations!
- Centers for Disease Control ans Prevention information for country specific advice.
- For information on in-country safety and security issues, travel warnings and advice. Additional country-specific information can be obtained from another State Department Website.
- Visit MSU Global Access for wide ranging country information including travel tips and up-to-date news.
- Are your passport and visa(s) current for the travel period? (Your passport should not expire sooner than 90 days after returning home.)
- Check on medical insurance coverage, and visit the MSU site for MEDEX.
- Check on vehicle insurance and driver's license requirements for areas where you will be driving.
- Make 2 copies of all important documents being carried (including the photo page of your passport). Leave one copy home, pack the second separately from originals.
- Carry photo identification and driver's license and only those credit cards and documents needed.
- Have perscription drugs in original containers and carry information on blood type and medical conditions.
- Carry essential prescription drugs and accompanying information in your carry on luggage.
- Put sensitive information in your carry on luggage.
- Leave a detailed travel schedule with office or family; check in with home or office upon arrival. Inform them of changes in your itinerary.
- Use luggage tags with flap and secure luggage with a lock and a strong baggage strap.
- Carry medical insurance cards on you.
- Before leaving, obtain and carry the phone numbers and addresses of the U.S. embassy and consular offices for the country(ies) you will visit.
- If possible, take a small amount of local currency for the country(ies) you will visit.
- Know and carry the contact number for MEDEX (1-800-537-2029)
In case of an emergency while traveling abroad
- Contact the on-site program director or leader
- MSU students, faculty and staff only: If the emergency involves a serious threat to your safety, security, or health, and if you wish to report this to the University and seek its advice or assistance,
Call the MSU emergency number collect (1-517-353-3784)
Be prepared to give:
- Your name.
- Where you are.
- A phone number at which you can be reached.
- The nature of the emergency.
Listen carefully to instructions you are given.
Use of the emergency number is limited to MSU students, faculty and staff. The phone is answered by the MSU Police Department; they direct calls as warranted. Carry this number with you!
