About MSU Global Access
MSU Global Access is a resource to help people learn about the world - its regions and peoples and important international issues.
Unique Features
Among the many Websites about international issues, MSU Global Access is unique in two ways:
You can search simultaneously by world region or country and by thematic area. Many websites present resources organized by region of the world or by themes, but do not provide this kind of intersecting search capacity. The search tool, which is built on the categories of our database, allows users to choose among many intersecting search possibilities. (Tips for using the search tool are available at Help with Search.)
We have compiled a particularly rich collection of resources, educational opportunities, and other services about the world created by organizations in Michigan - universities, government, and community organizations. These Michigan-based resources appear first in all search results.
New Resources
MSU Global Access has created some new resources in addition to its database of other websites. The Country Pages of this site provides easy access to lots of information. We have created several special resources on each country, including Travel Information and News Sources.
New on-line educational resources are being developed at MSU that are accessible from this site. Exploring Africa is designed especially for middle school teachers and students. Curriculum resources on other world areas are being developed.
MSU's International Resources and Commitment
This website has been developed under the auspices of the Michigan State University Office of International Studies and Programs. It reflects MSU's commitment to serve people of Michigan and beyond as part of its land grant tradition. In our increasingly interdependent world, MSU Global Access is one of the many ways that Michigan State University helps people learn about the world beyond the U.S.
MSU benefits from the extensive international engagement of its faculty and students, with more than 25 internationally focused centers and institutions, one of the nation's largest study abroad programs, more than 25,000 influential international alumni, and linkages with universities in more than 50 countries.
To select resources for MSU Global Access, we draw on the expertise of many internationally known and experienced MSU faculty throughout the university and, particularly, MSU's many area studies centers and international thematic institutes. An advisory board has helped to guide the project team.
MSU Global Access was released to the public in February 2001, coinciding with MSU President McPherson's annual State of the University Address, which emphasized MSU's global commitment.
Building MSU Global Access
We are continually adding to the resources in this database, which now number more than 8,500. Your suggestions of new sites are welcome. We also appreciate your feedback about the site and how it operates.
MSU Global Michigan
MSU Global Michigan contains only the resources in our database provided by Michigan-based organizations. These resources are organized in more specific categories. Visit this site to find such things as university centers about world areas, sister city relationships of Michigan's communities, programs in the state for studying foreign languages, and cultural groups of many national heritages from throughout the state.
Project Staff
Overall coordination of MSU Global Access is the responsibility of ISP Special Projects Coordinator Jay Rodman (rodman@msu.edu). The Website design and maintenance is the work of Scott DeMers (demerss1@msu.edu). The database architecture was designed by Geoffrey Wyatt, former ISP Web Coordinator (1999-2001).
