Asia is the largest continent in the world, located entirely
in the eastern hemisphere, east of Europe and northeast of
Africa. Oceania includes Australia, New Zealand, and a host of
island nations, stretching from Asia's east coast to
parts of the South Pacific in the western hemisphere.
The Asian
Studies Center at Michigan State University - The Asian
Studies Center (ASN) was established in 1962 to develop and
coordinate Asian-related programs and activities at Michigan
State University and to stimulate interest in Asia,
consisting of East, Southeast, and South Asia, in the Greater
Lansing area specifically and the state of Michigan in
general. The ASN's staff and faculty members seek to provide
information for all who are interested in Asia, through
teaching, research, and outreach programs. Asian Studies Center
is a Title VI federally-funded research center. This is a Michigan State University resource.
Association for Asian
Studies - Located in Ann Arbor, the Association for Asian
Studies (AAS) is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional
association open to all persons interested in Asia. It seeks through
publications, meetings, and seminars to facilitate contact and an
exchange of information among scholars to increase their
understanding of East, South, and Southeast Asia. It counts among
its members scholars, business people, diplomats, journalists, and
interested lay persons. This is a resource from the state of Michigan.
Asia Society - A leading
non-profit group focusing on Asia, the Asia Society "provides
a forum for building awareness of the more than thirty countries broadly
defined as the Asia-Pacific region - the area from Japan to Iran, and
from Central Asia to New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific
Islands."
Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was
"established in 1989 in response to the growing interdependence among
Asia-Pacific economies. Begun as an informal dialogue group, APEC has
since become the primary regional vehicle for promoting open trade and
practical economic cooperation. Its goal is to advance Asia-Pacific
economic dynamism and sense of community."
Windows on Asia - "Windows
on Asia is a website for K-12 teachers interested in bringing Asia into the classroom.
This site was created by the Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University to provide
material to assist teachers
of all levels (K-12) in integrating Asian themes into their classes. It provides brief
descriptions on important aspects of Asia in general, as well as more detailed information
on each individual country in Asia; it features teaching modules and links to important web
resources, many of which also contain teaching modules. Students of all ages may also find
this a useful starting point for their research on Asia." This is a Michigan State University resource.
Asian Studies
WWW Virtual Library - This collection of Asia-related resources has
been on the web since 1994. It includes several broad categories for
research, including news services, search engines, mailing lists, and a
special section on Chinese and Japanese art history.
Portal to Asian Internet Resources (PAIR)
- Offers more than six thousand professionally selected, cataloged and
annotated online resources for scholars, students and the interested public.
Catalogued web resources are in English and/or one of 27 Asian languages. PAIR
is a cooperative project between The Ohio State University Libraries, the
University of Minnesota Libraries, and the University of Wisconsin Libraries.
Erik Herron's Guide to Eurasia and the Baltics on the Web - This
collection of links is intended to facilitate research on political
and economic developments in the former Soviet Union. It is
updated regularly to include sites that provide useful information
in English and the languages of Eastern Europe and Central Eurasia. This is a resource initially developed at Michigan State Universitiy
