Human Rights An Ongoing ProcessRecent and not so recent generations have been hearing time and again about the necessity of promoting human rights. We are used to thinking that it can never happen to us or near us, that we are safe, that breach of human rights is always something that happens in remote lands and within cultures that we do not know or understand very well. However, you may be interested in finding out that violations of human rights occur everywhere in the world, including places where we least expect it to happen. This is why it is very important that each and every one of us becomes familiar with the rights and freedoms to which all human beings are entitled.
Any of us can become familiar with the contents of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and with what the Geneva Conventions contain: the internet makes a lot of information available on this topic. Also, most of the human rights organizations have very interesting websites where one can get updated on the latest news related to the matter.
Apart from the U.N. to which most of us are quite familiar, there are also many other non-governmental organizations that dedicate their work and sustained efforts to protecting and defending human rights, to lobbying the respect of human rights in various regions and countries. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Service for Human Rights and FIDH are just some of these organizations. Working as a volunteer for any of them is actually less complicated than you might think. All of these organizations and many others are welcoming volunteers and new members. So if you want to make a difference and if you have new interesting ideas, don’t be shy: contact them. Promoting human rights could involve your traveling to remote parts of the world or just staying in your home town. There’s always great need of people who are willing to watch over the human rights being respected, correctly interpreted and known. You could start even by making children more familiar with the topic and making the matter more appealing and interesting to them.
